Goldendale was the nearest town between up and the Dalles, it was 45 miles away and there were high mountains impassable in winter time between. Yakima City was then the only town in the Yakima Valley, it was called at that times 'Stomach Bitters' owing to the prevalence of whiskey drinking. Ellensburg was a name situated amid sage brush and sand dunes, abot the most desert looking place outside the center of the desert of Sahara, was 80 miles away and Walla Walla was 110."	en_US
