dc.description.abstract"Fort Simcoe was built in the Yakima Valley in 1856, during the Yakima Indian War, by Gen. Robert Selden Garnett. He went east in 1856 and married Mariana Nelson, daughter of George S. Nelson (at New York) She and her baby son, Arthur, died in 1858, in September, while he was absent from the fort on an Indian campaign. Then we have a newspaper reference from the New York Herald, December 1, 1858 and Nov. 29. One contains reference to the arrival of the Mail Steamship Illinois, arriving with bodies of wife and son."en_US
