Abstract

"Our winter commenced somewhat earlier than usual, snow falling toward the last of November and remaining on the ground till the present time with no prospect of more favorable weather. This has rendered the employment of quite a number of men necessary for gathering up the bands of cattle from their grazing grounds in various parts of the reservation and feeding them when gathered. This service has been paid entirely from annuity funds. I fear the severity of the winter will cause the Indians to lose many of their cattle and horses and notwithstanding that the Department has a large supply of hay, many of our cattle have probably escaped observation in the bushes along the creek bottoms and are lost."
