Abstract
"When spring came that year, he came back to the states and went home to find the girl. He was told she had gone up to Ft. Simcoe in the Yakima valley to teach. Coburn followed her and began a courtship. When he asked her to marry him the red-headed teacher asked coyly, 'If I married you, how would you support me?' That one was easy for a man with a poke full of gold dust. Coburn left her and went to purchase the trading post at the fort. The next day he confronted her with his new business and the girl had no alternative but to tell him the truth. She admitted that she was in love with a man in Colorado and that she was engaged to marry him. 'Well there I was,' Coburn said ruefully, in telling the story. 'One day I had a girl and no trading post and the next day I had a trading post and no girl.'"
