dc.description.abstract"Fort Simcoe, situated in the central part of Washington State, on the Yakima Indian Reservation, was established by Major Robert Selden Garnett of Virginia in 1856, as a protection for the white settlers against Indian depredations. The Fort was named for Maj. Gen. John Graves Simcoe, British officer, and Lieut. Governor of Ontario. Why Fort Simcoe was named for the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario is not clear."en_US
