Priest Rapids on the Mid-Columbia, although the epicenter of the Yakima Indian War of 1855-1858, was never a battleground between Indians and non-Indians. The country had been thrown open to settlement before the Indian title was extinguished. This was a climax to two centuries of violent conflict in America. That Priest Rapids was a no-man's land was due to the religious convictions of the people. The old men of the River People proudly said: 'We walk with clean feet. We keep clean hearts as our Creator directed. We refused to bloody the trail'."en_US
