dc.description.abstract"Competition among steamship companies operating up and down the Pacific coast was keen in the seventies, R. B. Milroy, court commissioner recalls. In 1873 when he received an appointment to the naval academy at Annapolis Milroy went to Victoria, B. C. to board a boat for San Francisco and go by rail east. The Pacific Steamship Co. and the Pacific Mail Co. competing lines did everything possible to get their boats out first. Milroy had purchased his ticket to go on the Vasco de Gama."en_US
