dc.description.abstract"She couldn't speak a word of English when she was 5 and was enrolled in the Forest Grove school. It was in 1880 that Capt. M. C. Wilkinson was detailed by the Army to establish the school in the Willamette Valley, 25 miles from Portland and the first pupils were from the Puyallup Reservation. In 1885 fire destroyed the main buildings at Forest Grove and a tract was purchased five miles north of Salem on the shores of Lake La Bish, an old camp site of tribesmen in a locality known as Chemawa, meaning 'old home.' The boys were sent ahead to constroct shake houses and clear some of the tangled wilderness for farm land."en_US
