dc.description.abstract"It has been estimated that two thirds of the downtown business blocks in Spokane were built with the proceeds of mining sales and dividends. Most of the branch railway lines which radiate from Spokane were constructed to serve mines and natural wealth of the hills has been converted into many philanthropic and educational enterprises such as the Hutton Settlement, Eastern Washington State Historical Society and the Spokane Public library.en_US
