Final section of a talk by Margaret E. Chisholm. Chisholm served as President of the American Library Association from 1987 to 1988. She also taught at the University of New Mexico and the University of Maryland. She was named Dean of the College of Library and Information Science in 1969 and served in that role until 1975. From 1975 to 1981, she served as vice president for University Relations and Development at the University of Washington. She was the university's first female vice president. She became Director of the University of Washington's Graduate School of Library and Information Science in 1981 and served in that position until she retired in 1992. First section of a talk by Michael Lynch. Lynch was the assistant director and then the director of North Central Regional Library. Headquartered in Wenatchee, he coordinated library services between the 23 branches in Chelan, Douglas, Ferry, Grant and Okanogan Counties — the largest library district in the contiguous U.S. — and introduced mail order library services throughout the rural areas of those counties. During his years as Director, Mike replaced bookmobiles with mail order library services and at the same time, expanded the services of branch libraries. North Central was one of the first library systems in the country to offer audio/video media throughout its service area. At the request of the Washington State Library, NCRLs mail order program also contracted to serve rural areas of Walla Walla, Pend Oreille and Stevens Counties, while work was done there to introduce branch library programs. And for two years, NCRL demonstrated mail order services to the entire state of Alaska. During his last several years as Director, Mike was heavily involved legislatively, working successfully to obligate a percentage of state property tax revenue specifically to libraries in order to guarantee their continued support long term.en_US
