| dc.description.abstract | "About 1860 the Indians having submitted to civil authority and with rumors of 'Civil War' arising the war department decided it had no further use for Fort Simcoe and gave it to the department of the interior; which at once assumed control and to this day it is still owned and operated by the department of the interior. The first Indian agent was a man by the name of R. H. Lonsdale who began operations about August, 1860. At that time there was no established rules for his guidance and his ideas and decisions were not always favorably received and soon much dissatisfaction arose. Lonsdale faced charges and he in time made counter charges. At last a man by the name of C. W. Walker was sent to replace Agent Lonsdale." | en_US |
