dc.description.abstract"Do you know: Yakima county's first and only great earthquake came in 1872 and everybody in the old Yakima City rushed from their cabins to note the flagpole at Schanno's store waving back and forth. The quake caused many slides in the Yakima basin. Fort Simcoe was established as a military post in August 8, 1856 with Col. George Wright commanding (he wrote that he had located the fort on To-pan-ish creek and..this valley is much warmer in winter than those further north..) Capt. Frederick Dent, brother-in-law of U. S. Grant put in the next month build a military road from The Dalles to the fort."en_US
