dc.description.abstract"Every stitch of clothing she had in the world held in the iron clutch of the lady-lady and to be held until the girl could pay off her debt, until she could wrest enough money from the capacious fingers that snatched at almost every cent of her dollars earned in shame and degradation. With these articles in someone else's possession, with not a shred of clothing she could call her own, for her to attempt to leave the house without permission of the mistress of it would be for her to commit a felony--to steal another's belongings. If she incurred the displeasure of the landlady she could be turned almost naked into the streets, without a cent to buy either food, clothing or lodging."en_US
