He instructed the agents he sent ahead of him to treat them well, and he himself sent them a now-famous letter, in which he expressed his friendship for them and his intention of treating them fairly. And so he did, by his own lights, in the eyes of his countrymen and successors, and in the memory of his name treasured by generations of Indians whose ancestors he befriended."	en_US
