Abstract
"Most important among these (Indians not located upon agencies) are the various bands of Snake. Little is known of them except that they are always determinedly hostile. They are a nomadic people sometimes appearing in Nevada under the lead of Winnemucca and treating with Governor Nye; sometimes in Utah holding council with Brigham Young or fighting Colonel Conner, sometimes warring upon miners or soldiers in Owyhee and Boise; and often making raids upon the friendly Indians at Warm Springs or the whites on the Canyon City road, but always having their hand against every man and every man's hand against them."
