Abstract
"A numbing cold wave a year ago today could not stall the pageant of life and Yakima and the valley quickly warmed to the tempo of community enterprise. It was tempered only by tragedy or death as 1949 paraded by. Slides formed by a 144-inch smowpack nearly closed Snoqualmie pass. The extended storm pelted down snow faster than it could be moved and provoked a debate among Yakima city officials on snow clearance responsibility--January 6--cut heavily into Northwest electric generating capacity, January 4, as the mercury sagged and brought appeals for conservation of electricity."
