"Fort Bellingham, on Bellingham Bay near the city of Bellingham, Whatcom county. It was established in 1856 with Capt. George E. Pickett of the Ninth Infantry, U. S. Army in command. He was later transferred to San Juan Island and still later during the Civil War gained fame as a Confederate leader, notably during Pickett's charge at Gettysburg. As the Indian troubles subsided Fort Bellingham was abandoned. (Meany)."
