Abstract
"Late in the fall of 1861 Lieut. Col. Wm. Hoffman, commissary general of prisoners came to Sandusky and leased from Mr. L. B. Johnson about forty acres of land on Johnson's island, to be used for a prison for Confederate officers. The post was known officially as Depot Prisoners of War, Johnson's Island, near Sandusky, Ohio. The island is in Sandusky Bay, a little over three miles from the city."
