Marcus Whitman seems to have been the pioneer in the introduction of irrigation. Whitman planted an orchard and a garden and dug a ditch to bring water to them. The Indians noted that Whitman's garden did better than theirs and asked him to let them draw water from his ditch. Howard went to Moses' camp with a strong body of troops and Moses agreed to deliver up the murderers if they could be found. In December, 1878, an agreement was made at the Yakima agency by which twenty white volunteers were to act with some of Moses' men in searching for the fugitive band."
