Hoffman, commissary general of prisoners came to Sandusky and leased from Mr. L. B. Johnson about forty acres of land on Johnson's island, to be used for a prison for Confederate officers. The post was known officially as Depot Prisoners of War, Johnson's Island, near Sandusky, Ohio.
