It was first applied to a river which Lewis and Clark, 1805-6 called the Tapteal also Eyakama. John H. Lynch of Yakima quotes the pioneer Jack Splawn as authority for 'Lake Water' as the meaning of Yakima. Henry Gannett says the word means Black Bear. The Bureau of American Ethnology says the word means runaway and that the native name for the tribe was Waptailmim, meaning people of the narrow river."NO KNOWN COPYRIGHT The organization that has made the Item available reasonably believes that the Item is not restricted by copyright or related rights, but a conclusive determination could not be made.
