Abstract
"In April, 1858 the Indian Chief John was taken in charge by the military and conveyed to the headquarters of the Department of the Pacific then at Benicia I think where he has since remained. Three of his daughters have recently called on me and made very earnest appeals for him to be returned in order that he might live with them the few remaining days of his life. His tribe are now nearly all dead."
