Abstract
"The major task of the Department during 1768 was the settlement of a definite boundary to the west of the Colonies, which was achieved at the Treaty of Fort Stanwix that Autumn. The new policy of the British Government entailed the settlement of this boundary, the withdrawal of troops from the frontier and their concentration on the Atlantic coast, the permanent establishment of the Indian Department, but with control only over treaties, land purchase, etc., the control of trade being given to the colonies, and finally the closure of the west to schemes for new Colonies."
