Abstract
"Jervais, who leaving for California at the beginning of March took care of this letters. We did not have any news of this brave shild so we are very sorrowful about this subject. We do not know if he is dead or alive, the rumor was going around that 14 or 15 Canadians had been killed at the mines. I would like to know if this is true. I have asked. I don't know how many times of news from you and all that I could gather was that you had written to the Rev. Father Alcoti to engage him to go to California to establish a college. I have also learned that you had told him that the miners would be scandalized if they would learn that the priests and the religious were going after the gold. The last reason has been discussed and no one of us will go to get some of it."
