Abstract

"The Mission on the Ahtanum was had existed for 18 years in the founding days of Yakima County. The priest who helped establish the Catholic mission, Father Jean Charles Pandosy has left his name and imprint in the Yakima Valley. But the priest's later labors and his death in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia have gone almost unrecognized in the Yakima Valley. The old mission in the Ahtanum, established by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate was abandoned eight years after it was built, when the Indians became hostile. The church building and the lean-to cabin in which the priests lived were burned by troops of a United States Army and Oregon Volunteers punitive expedition into the Yakima Country."
