Abstract
"The construction, in 1874, of the Visalia-Goshen railway inspired new hopes in the future of the town as a great railway center. In 1876, work was started on the westerly branch, running through the Mussel Slough country, and supposed to make connections at Tres Pinos. This road got as far as Alcalde only. However, Goshen did become the railroad center of the county and of the San Joaquin valley. Geographically, it is admirably situated, being midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles and within touching distance of Visalia and Exeter on the one hand, and with Hanford and Calinga on the other."
