Abstract
"The thousands of acres of underdeveloped land overspreading the broad miles of southwestern Grant County were called the Great Plain by the first white men who visited it to look upon it with scientific eyes in 1841 and 1853. The Grand Coulee was mapped and landmarked then. Little attention was paid to the land to the south, other than it was a region through which travelers had to pass. It was not until later this area was called the Wahluke Slope or merely 'the Slope.' And it would probably have remained nameless for many other years had not it been known to the original occupants of the region."
