Abstract

"Among both the whites and the Indians the organizations which had transacted most of the official business between the races disintegrated or were at least badly shaken under the shocks of war. While those colonists who sought to pacify the Indians by coming to terms with them, as between equals, were struggling under the difficulties which cropped up at their conferences, those who believed in pacification by military force had more immediate success."
