Abstract

"In the spring of 1871, Father Caruana, S. J., was named by his superiors to take over the management of the Mission of Saint Joseph at Ahtanum. Four years of labor among the settlers and the Indians convinced Father that if the Faith was to be preserved for the future generations a Catholic school was imperative. The adult white population was completely indifferent to the things of religion. The only way seemed to be to train the children who in turn would carry into the home the faith and example of a Christian education."
