Abstract

"Mason County, organized by act of legislature dated March 13, 1854 under the Indian name of Sawamish county. On January 3, 18654, the name was changed to honor Charles H. Mason, first secretary of the Territory of Washington who had died in 1859 after gallant and efficient services as secretary and acting governor during the Indian wars.
