Abstract

"A. A. Bancroft, brother of the famous historian was appointed by Abraham Lincoln but was a dismal failure and was succeeded by Father Wilbur, who had been a teacher. He served until 1882. No other person in Washington and Oregon history reached the pinnacle of self-made success achieved by Father Wilbur, none did more to establish the Indian agency system as a way to teach the tribesmen the ways of the new civilization and no other man worked as hard as the giant of a man, the Methodist zealot."
