Abstract
"Nan num-kun, of the Rock Island Indians, a good looking and cleanly dressed one, whose brother had been chief and who had come over here yesterday to feel the way, called today on his way back. He represents Teias as determined to come in, that Owhi is sick with dysentery and that Cobte-ne-nac, who had gone for horses stolen by the Cayuses, is coming back and wants to be friends. He wanted to take flour and a papaper to show that these people were now our friends. I sent one bag expressly for old Teias and gave him one to show our friendly disposition. I sent my heart with Teias' bag. I refused the paper saying I wished to have an understanding first with their chief. If his heart was good and he was our friend he must come in and see me, for he had nothing to fear."
