Abstract
"The emigration is very large this year and the greater part go to the mines. That branch is entirely over done, so much so that those there cannot get room to work proffitably. There are hundreds of thousands in the mines from all nations under heaven that ever heard of California. The gold taken out in the aggregate will be this year immense, perhaps one hundred millions of dollars but there is so many at the business that the share of each will be small after the expenses are paid and I think that gold digging at this time is the poorest business done in California. Farming is now the best business in California for years to come and perhaps forever."
