Abstract

"James Kinney of this city, who enjoys the distinction of being one of the pioneers of the Yakima valley, says that he named Horse Heaven in 1881. Formerly it was called the Bedrock Springs country. Mr. Kinney was going down to the valley on occasion of the naming of the country aforementioned and having camped one night below Prosser awoke the next morning to find that his animals had strayed and the tracks led up the mountainside and over into the upland plain, beautiful to behold and there he found the runaway horses cropping the succulent bunchgrass with apparent good relish. 'Surely this is Horse Heaven' quoth Mr. Kinney to himself."
