Abstract

Portland, Ore., claims to have the fastest sternwheel steamboat in the world. The Hassalo recently completed for the Columbia River trade has made spurts of 26 and two thirds miles an hour. She is 186 feet long with a tubed boiler eight feet in diameter and compound engines of over 8,000 horse power. The boat is so swift that it was found necessary to strengthen her rudder."
