Abstract
"The site of the fort is about 700 feet higher than the plain on which Wapato and Toppenish are located and from the forest the cast expanse of level land eastward melts away in the shimmering distances into desert ridges, all their arid desolation clothed in azure beauty. The buildings at the fort were very expensive, having been constructed from timbers brought around Cape Horn, transported from Portland to The Dalles and since hauled to the fort."
