Abstract
"After graduating from West Point in 1841 he served with the Fourth Artillery on the Canadian border and as assistant instructor in infantry tactics at the Military Academy. He was later (1845) aide de campe to General Wool, and during the Mexican War to General Taylor. Distinguishing himself in the Battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma he was successively breveted captain and major for gallant and meritorious conduct in the battles of Monterey and Buena Vista, respectively."
