Abstract

"Fort Simcoe was established in the fall of 1856 'not for the immediate protection of the whites, but to keep the Indians in awe' and to learn their feelings and intentions and 'to check these when they become inimical,' When Major General Wool's conciliatory policy, bitterly opposed by many civilian officials and residents of the Washington Territory had been discredited as a result of the renewal of hostilities by the Indians in 1858, Fort Simcoe was abandoned by the military in the following spring."
