Abstract
"Washington Territory served as a training ground for many generals who went on to fame in the Civil War. Her first Territorial Governor, Isaac I. Stevens, fell in battle as he lead his troops at Chantilly. Generals Grant, Pickett, McClellan, Sheridan, and others were all stationed at tone time or another in Washington Territory, some of them participating in the Indian Wars of the 1850's. Washington Territory also served as an important channel through which the treasure of the Frazer gold fields found its way to the Union, helping to finance the terrible cost of the national conflict."
