    Final half of a talk by Patrick O'Brien on the internet. He previously gave talks at two earlier Plath Forums, in 1985 and 1990. O'Brien was in the reference library for Newsweek magazine in New York City, 1965-1972; he was the assistant director of research for FIND/SVP, in New York City, 1972-1974; he was also the head of the central library, cultural center, Chicago Public Library., 1974-1979; as well as director of the Cuyahoga County Public Library., Cleveland, 1979-1984; director of libraries for Dallas Public Library 1984-1992; and director of the Alexandria (Virginia) Library since 1992. Member of national advising committee to Library. of Congress. O'Brien was a member of the national advising committee to the Library of Congress, and he was also the recipient of the Servant as Leader award for the City of Dallas in 1989.

    Final half of a talk by Dr. Donald Hines. Hines authored several books on the history of the area, including Magic in the Mountains, the Yakima Shaman: Power & Practice. In 1969 he received a PhD in folklore and American studies from Indiana University. He joined the faculty of Washington State University in 1968, where he became associate professor of folklore in the literary studies program. In 1973, he received a National Endowment for the Humanities grant to study the folklore of pioneers of the inland Pacific Northwest frontier, and he published several indices of resources on the subject. In 1981 he took a post as an English teacher at King Saud University in Abha, Saudi Arabia, where he remained for nine years. After his return from Saudi Arabia in 1990, he joined the faculty at Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton, Oregon, where he taught English. He also taught English in the education department at Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution.

    Talk by Anne Haley, entitled To Grow a Library Village, and the Coup in Russia. Haley had a 32-year career in public librarianship, including 20 directing the Walla Walla Public Library, before finishing her public library career at the Yakima Valley Regional Library, 1997-2002. She then worked as chairman of the board of directors for Brown & Haley candy company in Tacoma. She is now a print artist, and was appointed by Governor Christine Gregoire to the state Transportation Commission. Haley also served as chairwoman of the Washington State Library Commission, president of the Washington Library Association and president of the Northwest Library Association, as well as the ALA Representative for the State of Washington.

    Talk by June Garcia Her experience includes six years as director of an urban library (San Antonio Public Library), twelve years as the administrator of a branch library system (Phoenix Public Library), and five years as a branch manager. She has served as CEO of the CARL Corporation, and as Vice President and Chief Ambassador of TLC/CARL, both major library automation companies providing integrated systems to public libraries and consortia. Ms. Garcia is now a managing partner, along with Ronald Dubberly, of Dubberly Garcia Associates, a broad-based consulting company serving the library industry. June has been an active participant for over twenty-five years in the Public Library Association’s efforts to develop tools that will enable public librarians and trustees to effectively plan, measure and evaluate public library service. She served as member of the committee that produced Planning and Role Setting for Public Libraries (1987) and Output Measures for Public Libraries (1987) and Planning for Results: The Public Library Transformation Process (1998). She chaired the committees that oversaw the creation of Managing for Results: Effective Resource Allocation for Public Libraries (2000) and Staffing for Results: A Guide to Working Smarter (2002). She is co-author of Creating Policies for Results: From Chaos to Clarity. She also co-authored a book published by ALA entitled Public Library Service Responses, 2007. In 2018, June was inducted into the Society of Excellence by the Associate Alumnae of Douglass College (NJ), her undergraduate alma mater. In 2019, June was the 2019 recipient of the Melvil Dewey medal from the American Library Association.

She was the president of the Association for Library Service to Children from 1987 to 1988. She also served as president of the American Library Association from 1996 to 1997. An important initiative of Somerville's presidency was the creation of the ALA's Emerging Leaders Institute, a program to develop leadership in those new to the library profession. Somerville served as the director of the Miami-Dade Public Library System from 1994 until her retirement in 1998. She oversaw the renovation of one-third of the system's libraries and the reopening of libraries that had been damaged by Hurricane Andrew.
